    Description
[Ernest Amedee Mouchez]  Eight Signed Autograph Letters written to French Astronomer and Navy Admiral Mouchez, Director of the Paris (astronomic) Observatory, 1877-1887.
    20 pp. Text in French.
    Admiral Mouchez
was a veteran astronomic photographer who took 400 daguerreotype images of the transit of Venus. He
was instrumental in launching a vast and unprecedented international star-mapping project –  the “Carte du Ciel” [Map of the Sky or Atlas of the Heavens]. He mobilized the cooperation of 18 observatories throughout the world using the latest technological advances in photography to produce the first accurate atlas of all observable stars. The massive project went on for decades after Mouchez’s death and laid the foundation for modern astronomic photography.
The letters also contain several references to Mouchez’s research project on the variations of Latitude which he conducted on voyages to South America.
Among his correspondents in these letters: Yvon Villarceau a mathematician and engineer who constructed instruments for the Observatory and Herve Faye, an expert observer of comets and meteors who was later President of the French Astronomical Society.
